Performance

Performance Interests

I’m interested in improvisation, especially free improvisation, and I’ve performed as a free improviser on bassoon a number of times.  In particular, my improvisational technique combines the melodic capacity of the bassoon with its harmonically-dense multiphonics, noisy air sounds, and percussive keys.  Additionally, I’m interested in using the bassoon as a modular instrument, using each individual part as an instrument in its own right, divorced from the ideal of the whole instrument.

As a contemporary music performer, I’m particularly interested in interpreting text scores and graphic notation, whether as a bassoonist, vocalist, or other performer.  I’ve performed works by composers such as Yoko Ono, Pauline Oliveros, John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Amanda Schoofs, Robert Ashley, and Christopher Burns.  I’m particularly interested in works that ask the performer to prepare in ways not traditionally accounted for as practicing — whether that’s preparing time structures to fit sonic or performative information into or exploring new modes of experiencing sound, performance, or life in general.
