organ piece (2017)

for organ and voice

This piece was originally created for the practice organ at Wesleyan University's Memorial Chapel. The practice organ whines and squeaks, and is slightly out of tune. The room it sits in is brightly resonant. While playing the organ, you can feel the air vibrating against your body and if you make any sound at all, you can feel how your sound waves bounce against the organ's.

organ piece (2017) plays with beating patterns: the physical interference of sound waves as they interact with one another. In recording this piece, I was careful to capture how the intricate beating patterns that emerge through the performance seem to shimmer in the air, almost like they are physical, tangible objects.
